Project Description
Primary Energy's Southport combined heat and power facility is a 120 MW coal, tire-derived fuel ("TDF") and fuel fired plant which provides steam to the nearby Archer Daniels Midland Company. Electric output is sold to Carolina Power & Light, a wholly owned subsidiary of Progress Energy, under a power purchase agreement.
Commercial Operation
1987
Benefits
Primary Energy Southport provides ADM's process steam requirements and provides critical electical capacity and energy to Carolina Power and Light. The plant's six stoker boilers burn a combination of coal and tire-derived fuel. Tire-derived fuel is the product of chipping waste tires and removing the metal from the tread. Tires not used as fuel are most often disposed of in landfills.
