Project Description
Primary Energy's Roxboro Cogeneration Facility is a 60 MW coal, tire-derived fuel ("TDF") and waste wood fueled cogeneration facility plant which provides steam to the adjacent Collins & Aikman Corporation textile manufacturing facility. Electric output is sold to Carolina Power & Light, a wholly owned susidiary of Progress Energy, under a power purchase agreement.

Benefits
Primary Energy Roxboro provides Collins and Aikman's process steam requirements as well as other plant utilities and provides critical electrical capacity and energy to Carolina Power and Light. The plant's three stoker boilers burn a combination of coal, wood, and tire-derived fuel. Wood waste is an abundant by-product fuel produced by North Carolina's extensive forestry-related industries. Tire-derived fuel is the product of chipping waste tires and removing the metal from the tread. Tires not used as fuel are most often disposed of in landfills.
